if what we mean by consciousness

is this qualitative aspect of our mental life,

consciousness remains a pretty big mystery.

We don't know how to explain it in physicalist terms.

And it's because of that

that I think we shouldn't be dismissive of the dualist

when the dualist says,

"We've got to believe in souls in order to explain it."

but that's not to say that I think we should be convinced.

Because it's one thing to say we don't yet know
