we are talking about a broad expanse of time.

So these people, or at least many of them,

are truly British Americans at this point.

Colonists were also not Britons in yet another way--

another distinctive feature of colonial society--

and that's again something I referred to at the beginning,

and that's the great ethnic and religious diversity.
