I've been reading a lot lately the speeches of Martin Luther King.
-
They're something that have impacted me deeply
-
and helped me think about why I work on food issues.
-
King imagines this world as a world--he talks about it
-
through the lens of food where he sees injustice,
-
he talks about it as rotten meat or stale bread,
-
and when he talks about the vision of the world he imagines,
-
he actually--he says--he refers to a biblical image.
-
He says everyone will have their own fig tree
-
and everyone will have their own grapevine.
-
In this very, very simple fundamental way,
-
food is connected to community and connected to this vision
