Well, my point is simply that that can be a peculiarly

enthralling exercise for periods of the distant past

for which the evidence is often ambiguous

or difficult or partial,
-
in which it's produced by unfamiliar institutions,
-
in which people are thinking

with unfamiliar casts of mind,
